Comments on Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation

This is a very short post and beginning of a comment thread on what exactly Lincoln meant in his Thanksgiving Proclamation. He drops the word "God" a lot, but his use is a bit strange: instead of talking about the Bible, he talks about God and the political situation and purposes of the US. Does he have a higher purpose for the US?
